A Conversation with Drs. Christopher Kinsinger and Henry Rodriguez about Sharing Proteomics Data
Last September, NCI’s Office of Cancer Clinical Proteomics Research convened a workshop of researchers and stakeholders in the field of proteomics to discuss ways to better share data about the structure and functions of proteins—a challenge facing the entire proteomics community. The meeting, held in Sydney, Australia, addressed establishing standards to ensure the quality of the data, particularly those generated by a technique known as mass spectrometry. A meeting report with recommendations for the field was recently published simultaneously in four journals simultaneously.![]()

A Conversation with Matthew Zachary about the Young Adult Cancer Movement
In 1995, during his senior year of college, aspiring concert pianist Matthew Zachary was diagnosed with brain cancer and entered a cancer world geared toward the needs of children and older adults. A decade after emerging from the experience, he founded the I’m Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation (i[2]y), which serves as a “community of support” for young adults, survivors of childhood cancers, and caregivers. Through its Web site, cancer conferences, forums, and Stupid Cancer Radio Show, i[2]y has become one of the many voices championing the needs of young adults with cancer.![]()

A Conversation with Dr. Angela Mariotto and Dr. Martin Brown on the Rising Costs of Cancer Care
A new study from researchers in NCI’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) published January 12 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute projects that the cost of caring for the U.S. population of cancer patients and survivors will increase substantially over the next 10 years. The researchers used data on cancer incidence and survival and on care costs by phase of care to develop estimates of the overall cost of care. They found that even if medical costs, cancer incidence, and survival remain static, the rapid aging of the U.S. population will cause the overall cost of care to rise from $ 125 billion in 2010 to $ 158 billion by 2020. If costs of care rise by only 2 percent annually, the overall cost of cancer treatment would rise to $ 173 billion by 2020, an almost 40 percent increase over the course of 10 years. Dr. Angela Mariotto, lead author of the study, and Dr. Martin Brown, chief of the Health Services and Economics Branch in DCCPS, recently spoke about this looming issue and how to address it.![]()
